Dear WSHS Alumni Association,
Lisa and I would like to thank the WSHS Alumni Association for the scholarship awarded our daughter Ellen Cleveland. It will certainly help lighten our financial load as we prepare for Ellen’s first year at Chapman. It was surprising to learn, in receiving the award, that WSHS Alumni Association is one of the largest and most giving in the country. My hat’s off to the Alumni and the support they are providing to the WSHS Students.

Dear West Seattle High School Alumni Association,
I still remember the first time I understood the concept of college. It was my first year of middle school and the idea of more schooling after high school seemed daunting and unreal. It wasn’t until a friend of mine, who graduated high school years before me, relayed his budding college experiences. He told me of the environment and the difficulty. Like any young high school student, I took his words for granted. Fast forward a few years to my senior year of high school where I was awarded the Ross & Viola Galbreath Memorial Scholarship by your association. It’s hard for me to think of a time when I was more elated than when I heard that announcement. I was proud that my efforts in high school did not go unnoticed and incredibly thankful that such kindness would be shown to me. I knew that in college I would have to continue to show that I still deserve such a scholarship.
From the beginning of my freshman year to my current standing (I’m almost a junior now), I have taken some of the toughest classes that are available to students and it has not been an easy road. Nevertheless, I try my hardest and do my best with what I am given, and have been getting decent grades (especially with the difficulty of many of my classes). Along with my studies, I decided to get a job to give myself more work experience. For the last year, I have been working as the sound technician at the Husky Union Building, where I operate complex audio systems and work with student groups to manage their events smoothly. So far, I’ve worked with many local celebrities and met a few CEO’s of fortune 500 companies. In addition, I have been a member of the robotics club at UW. I’ve worked with them to create a few robots, but I also design and make my own in my dorm room. In a few weeks, I’m going to apply to the Electrical Engineering department and hopefully be accepted. I have a couple backup majors, but none would make me happier than EE.
So far, my college journey has been an excited, albeit an incredibly difficult, experience with much personal growth. I’m extremely thankful of this scholarship that you have awarded me. I’m not sure if words can fully and effectively articulate how grateful I am towards the WSHS Alumni Association for choosing me as the recipient of this incredible scholarship. When I’m going through tough times and my pile of homework doesn’t seem to have a bottom, the thought of this scholarship and your association pushes me the extra mile.
You are all wonderful people and thank you for helping me step closer to my dreams.

Dear WSHS Alumni Association,
As I sit here trying to find words that could possibly express my gratitude for all that you have given me, I find myself thinking back through the last three years of my life and trying to imagine what my life would be like, had I not gone to college. A life without the friends I have made, without the knowledge I have gained and without the networking contacts I have acquired. This alternative course my life could have taken is certainly less than desirable, but was not entirely out of the question when deciding what to do after high school. The support and encouragement you have shown me over the last three years has meant a great deal to me. I will never forget the opportunity you have given me and can only hope that I might someday be able to return the favor.
Sincerely,
Ray Carter

Dear WSHS Alumni,
I am extremely grateful for the scholarship you have provided me. It has truly taken an immense financial burden off of my family and it has significantly helped to push my education forward. In my time in college, I have grown as a scholar as well as a person thanks to this opportunity.
I have now been accepted into the Foster School of Business and am excited to delve deeper into my passion. Over the next few years I hope to be involved in internships as well as leadership experiences. My road ahead is bound to be more challenging than ever, making it that much more meaningful that I have your gracious support.
Your generosity has been incredible and has given me a level of comfort in what is otherwise a time of risk-taking and stress about my future. You have been very kind to me and have helped me in a way that I cannot fully express.
Thank you!

Dear WSHS Alumni Association,
It is hard to believe that I am over halfway done with my third year here at the University of Washington. Even as an upper classman, I am still discovering something new about our campus every day. Last year, I declared my major in Biology (with a focus in Physiology) and a minor in Chinese. I am so excited to have started taking the upper division classes within my major. Last quarter I took microbiology, survey of physiology, nutrition and medical ethics. Initially it was hard balancing four classes, but my hard work paid off when I made the Dean’s List at the end of autumn quarter.
This quarter I am taking physics, laboratory techniques in cellular & molecular biology, foundations in physiology and physiology lab. I am also continuing my work as a student assistant in the lab of Dr. Marilyn Roberts within the Department of Environmental Health. This quarter, I was given the opportunity to perform my own undergraduate research project under the guidance of Dr. Roberts. My project for the rest of this year involves studying the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in bacteria samples collected throughout the State of Washington. Some of the bacteria that I have worked with are known to cause complications in humans such as MRSA and skin and intestinal disease. Being able to work on a research project is a great way to apply what I have been taught in my science classes. I am also learning hands-on how certain scientific concepts can be used to benefit human health.
In addition to attending class and working in the lab, I also volunteer in the Transplant Department at the University of Washington Medical Center. Volunteering at the hospital is very rewarding because I get to witness medicine in action and help the patients in their recovery process. I am also a Team Leader in the University Health and Education Leadership Program (UHELP) on campus. UHELP is a student run organization that aims to promote health and wellness awareness in the university community. We do this by giving presentations to freshman classes, residential dorms and fraternities and sororities about ways to stay healthy as a college student. We also hold health and wellness events throughout the quarter.
Ever since starting college, I was always interested in medicine and healthcare. However, volunteering in a medical clinic in Costa Rica this past summer was what made me realize that working in healthcare is what I want to do for the rest of my life. Fifteen other UW students and I went to Costa Rica for two weeks to set up mobile medical, dental and veterinary clinics. As part of the medical group, I worked in a team of other students to perform physical exams, test vitals and determine preliminary diagnoses. We would then report to the doctor in our group, who would let us know if our diagnosis was correct. In those two weeks, I gained a tremendous amount of experience in providing healthcare to patients. Some of the people living in the communities we visited would not have had access to healthcare otherwise. In addition to gaining medical experience, volunteering in a third world country was an eye-opening experience that I will never forget.
All of this would not have been possible without the generosity of the WSHS Alumni Association. It has allowed me to pursue my goals and attend the college of my dreams. I am grateful and honored that the Alumni Association continues to support me in my educational journey. I hope that I can make the Alumni Association proud and represent the West Seattle High School community well.
Thank you for everything,
Karen Lowe (Class of 2010)
