2020 Scholarship Awardees Thank You’s

Laura Reed

Dear WSHS Alumni Association,

Thank you for awarding me the Ross & Viola Galbreath and Jim Finnie Scholarships. It is such an honor to receive these awards. Because of the Alumni Association, the financial expenses of my freshman year at the University of Washington will be greatly eased. At the University of Washington, I will be majoring in chemistry and minoring in mathematics. I look forward to and am excited to learn and do research at a great university. Once again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. No words can describe how appreciative I am of your time and commitment to all of us. I hope one day I too can give back to the West Seattle High School Community.

Dear WSHS Alumni,

I am extremely grateful to have received the Patricia Feldman Noyes Women in Science Scholarship. This is an enormous help in allowing me to attend my dream school, UCLA, and in helping myself and my family with the cost of out of state tuition. I am especially honored to receive the specific scholarship as I am proud to represent women in stem and help create more female representation within the field. I am passionate about using my education to one day help others as I hope to become an immunologist, and this means an extensive future of schooling, making this scholarship even more valuable. I am grateful for all that West Seattle High School has done for me and for the support of the Alumni Association.

Dear WSHS Alumni Association,

As I reread my award letter for the twentieth time to ensure that I am, in fact, the correct recipient of your scholarship, I feel immensely honored and humbled. Among the changes to everyday life and prolonged uncertainty of physical attendance of school this coming fall, this recognition served as a reminder to me of the generosity this incredible community shares. Browsing the courses offered at the University of San Diego made me ecstatic and I’m itching to get back into the classroom. West Seattle High School gave me the ability to learn freely and without criticism. The development of my curiosity for biology, love of learning, and appreciation of diversity are a tribute to the academically-stimulating
and supportive environment that radiated in the hallways of West Seattle High School which is why I will work tirelessly at USD to make this special community proud. I am eternally grateful for your acknowledgment and support. Thank you, West Seattle Alumni.

Dear WSHS Alumni Association,

I am so very appreciative of the generous scholarship that was awarded to me by the association. This money provides aid for me and my family while we all move forward from this historically trying time. The financial help really allows me to put a focus towards my education which will greatly impact the quality of knowledge that I will come out of college with. Upon many other things, I will also be able to build my character becoming a stronger person and leader. This will all accumulate to mold me to be a person who serves and leads for the common good of all people. This money also will help me live on the legacy of my grandpa and cousins allowing me to attend Gonzaga University. This school means a lot
to my family and I am beyond grateful that I am able to attend GU. If not for generous scholarships like this one I would have never had the opportunity to consider this school as an option for me, especially after what has transpired with the pandemic and my family having three WSHS alumni attending college at the same time next year. Once again I am truly appreciative and grateful that the WSHS Alumni Association has given me the opportunity to further achieve my dreams and continue the WSHS spirit at
Gonzaga.

Dear West Seattle High School Alumni Association,

Thank you so much for this scholarship! I am honored to have earned this and appreciate the help it’s giving me to achieve my college education! Having lived in West Seattle my whole life it was destined that I would attend WSHS. The 4 years I spent there made me into the person I am today, each teacher, student and faculty member impacted my experience at West Seattle. While I never thought I was ready to leave high school and the safety and comfort it provided me, I am confident that WSHS taught me everything I needed to succeed this far and am honored to call myself an alumni. This scholarship will
allow me to further my education and it gives me the comfort of knowing that I have support in working towards my future goals. Thank you again for this scholarship and go Wildcats!

Dear WSHS Alumni Association,

Thank you so much for the opportunity you have provided me through the WSHS Alumni Scholarship! I am off to Bowdoin College next fall to study the environment. Though they have one of the best Environmental Studies programs in the nation, affording a liberal arts education on the other side of the country will not be easy during these uncertain times. Being awarded your scholarship will alleviate some of the stress of simultaneously managing work and school. Your support has helped make attending my dream college more affordable, and I am so incredibly grateful for that.

Dear, WSHS Alumni,

Thank you for renewing the scholarship for my coming sophomore year. It’s a true blessing to receive this kind of financial support during my college experience. Freshman year was incredible and full of joy. I’ve loved all of my classes and have made friends who I can see being a part of my life for a long time. The Gonzaga cheer team has also been amazing. I love the crowd and the energy they bring every basketball game. It’s a constant thrill that I wouldn’t give up for the world. On top of all of that, studying for my major has been challenging and wonderful. As of now, I am a double major in broadcasting and
communications. The two mesh together perfectly and I know I’m getting a quality education here. I feel right at home whenever I’m on campus and you all made that possible. Without your financial help, I probably wouldn’t be attending Gonzaga University right now. So I want to say again, thank you. Thank you for supporting my dreams and goals in life. I’ve never been happier and you’ve made me excited for life. I’m beyond ecstatic for the New Year.

Dear WSHS Alumni,

I am eternally grateful for your support this past year, and into the future. Despite the craziness in the world right now I can confidently say that my freshmen year at University of Washington has been one of the best experiences of my life so far, and I have no doubt it will only get better from here. I’ve worked hard this past year, and it means a lot to know I have the support of the WSHS Alumni. Because of your generous support I have been able to avoid taking out any student loans. Making it through college with minimal debt has been one of my main goals, because I know how easily student loans can build up and could take decades to pay off. Again, I am extremely thankful for your support, for the money itself but also the moral support that WSHS Alumni provides. I am so proud to be included in and
represent this wonderful community. Thank you!!

Travers Sorenson

Dear WSHS Alumni,

I would like to thank you again for your generosity in granting me the Roth and Viola Scholarship. It has been an immense help in paying for the high cost of college. I’ve been putting it to good use over the past year, ending second semester with a 3.96 cumulative GPA. I’m so glad I got the opportunity to go to Purdue and get the experience a world class university has to offer. It has provided me with a better understanding of my academic limits and my intended career. Ending the semester early because of COVID was definitely a shock. I was able to finish the semester online, but of course it isn’t the same as being on campus.

For a number of reasons, I’ve made the decision that for this coming semester I will transfer to Washington State University. I’m still glad I got a chance to try out Purdue, as my time there taught me a lot. I’m still dead set on Mechanical Engineering as my major and will continue to pursue it at WSU. This scholarship will be a great help in allowing me to graduate from WSU virtually debt free. Again, I would like to thank you enormously for granting me this scholarship.
Sincerely,

Madison Brodahl

Dear West Seattle Alumni,

Thank you again for continuing to support me and my future with your generous scholarship. Every year that passes at Western I feel so grateful for the association and for all the opportunities it has created for me.
In college I have maintained a very busy schedule with classwork, sports and work. This upcoming spring I plan to graduate with a degree in biology and a minor in Spanish. The continual Patricia Feldman Noyes scholarship has tremendously lightened the financial burden of school and has allowed me to focus on my learning first and foremost. After I graduate next spring, I plan to take time off from school to complete my 2,000 hours of working in the medical field and then apply for graduate school to become a physician assistant.
The generosity from your scholarship over the past three years has helped me get closer to my career goal and has made it more attainable over the years. I hope that one day I can also help young scholars the way you have supported me.

Annie Means

Dear West Seattle Alumni Association,

I’m writing to you all today to thank you for continuing my Patricia Feldman Noyes scholarship. In a private university where I watch many of my peers take out several loans just to maintain their education, my gratitude for this scholarship only continues to grow. Especially as I approach graduation within the next two years, this scholarship means more and more.

This award is enabling me to graduate with little debt, which in today’s society is an incredible feat for college students. Thank you dearly for believing in me, granting me this scholarship, and enabling me to pursue my studies. I intend to graduate in 2022 and go on to pursue higher education. This scholarship is largely one of the reasons why I feel comfortable financially and academically pursuing a graduate degree.

I hope you are all staying safe and doing well in these hectic times. I can’t express my gratitude enough for you all and this award. Thanks again.

Dear Alumni,

In these strange times it was an incredible relief for the continued support from the WSHS alumni to help fund my education at Whitman College. My family and I are grateful for this educational gift, which will help reduce my student loans when I graduate and enter the workforce in these tough economic times. I never take my education for granted, and I dedicate myself in college to getting the most out of a very expensive but prestigious institution like Whitman. Thank you so much.

Marlee Bennett

Dear WSHS Alumni,

Last year when I received your gift towards my education, I was thankful for your generous contribution. However, this year after I was unable to work all three of the summer jobs I had planned and several of my friends announced that they are unable to return to college next semester due to financial limitations, I awoke to the cost of college reality. This year, I can not thank you enough for believing in me with your gift. Your contribution will help me continue on my lifelong dream of becoming an elementary teacher and educating the youth of tomorrow. During the Covid-19 pandemic, I found value in the gifts that I have in my life and the importance of my education. When I returned to Seattle in March to finish the semester online, I was reminded of the importance of enjoying the present moment and finding gratitude in my life. Who would have thought I would have missed cafeteria food and the long hours studying in the library? Then, when there was a possibility that the University would not return at all for in person instruction for fall semester, I realized how much I took my education for granted as well. When I return in the fall, thanks to your commitment to continuing my education, life may look different, but I will value each moment I have.

These sure are troubling times, but through a combination of generosity of others and the commitment to finding joy and gratitude in our lives, we can make it through. Thank you WSHS Alumni.
