Tom Collier Mallet Head – WSHS Scholarship Benefit Concert

The Tom Collier Quartet will present “20th Century American Music: Decade By Decade”. Featured on the program are 10 songs, one from each decade of the 20th century including: Memphis Blues (1900’s); After You’ve Gone (1910’s); Star Dust (1920’s); Stompin’ At The Savoy (1930’s); Manteca (1940’s); Sister Sadie (1950’s); Anyone Who Had A Heart (1960’s); A Song For You (1970’s); Make You Feel My Love (Bob Dylan, 1980’s); All Apologies (Nirvana, 1990’s).
Members of the quartet include Tom Collier, vibes, John Hanford, guitar, Dan Dean, electric bass, Ben Smith, drums. John Hanford is a northwest musical icon having played with a mulititude of groups including The Wailers, Monster Road, world-renowned singer Patti Allen, and The Daily Flash to name a few. Ben Smith, longtime drummer with the legendary rock group Heart, has played with an “A” list of performers including Taj Mahal, Cyndi Lauper, Lovemongers, Deniece Williams, Peter Frampton, Nancy Wilson, and Ernestine Anderson. Electric bassist Dan Dean likewise has a long history playing with important jazz and pop artists including Shelly Manne, Howard Roberts, B.B. King, Donny Hathaway, Diane Schuur and many many more. University of Washington Professor Emeritus Tom Collier has been playing music for over 60 years and has had many opportunities to perform with such artists as Natalie Cole, Peggy Lee, Frank Zappa, Mannheim Steamroller, Sammy Davis, Jr., Barbra Streisand, Johnny Mathis, Olivia Newton-John, The Beach Boys and so on.
This will be the third annual concert to raise money for the West Seatte High School scholarship fund. Both Tom Collier (1966) and Dan Dean (1971) graduated from West Seattle H.S. and will donate their talent as well as the admission proceeds from the concert.
